Become a Volunteer

Volunteering Matters!
The Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) leads the field of special education in advocacy, standards, and professional learning and practice because of our amazing volunteers. Every volunteer is valued, enriches the organization, makes us more diverse and inclusive, and brings us one step closer to achieving our mission.
If you are a CEC member, you can volunteer! We encourage ALL members to deepen your engagement with CEC, your professional home.
What volunteer opportunities are available?
There are about 20 positions available annually with CEC Headquarters’ Board and Committees. Current volunteer leadership opportunities are announced via Special Education TODAY, email, and social media. Many more opportunities exist with our Units and Special Interest Divisions.
Why become a CEC volunteer leader? Amy Braddock, a special education teacher from North Dakota, shares her "why."
Board of Directors
The Board is the sole governing body of CEC and has the authority to determine annually the number of board members necessary to fulfill the mission of the organization. Applications are accepted annually (typically beginning in mid-March).
Committees
CEC has two types of committees: standing and advisory. Applications for committees are accepted at various times throughout the year based on the committee’s operating cycle.
Workgroups
Workgroups are established as needed by the Board of Directors to complete a specific charge within a designated period of time. Workgroup members have knowledge, experience, and expertise in a particular area of strategic importance to CEC.
