Annual goals and present level of academic and functional performance are required components of the individualized education programs (IEP) for students with identified disabilities. A wide range of service providers, in addition to special educators take responsibility for establishing and writing IEP goals and objectives. This article provides suggestions for writing SMART IEP goals. The SMART acronym stands for Specific, Measurable, [contain] Action verbs, Realistic, and Time-limited.
