Giving for the Next Generation

When something is right, you feel it in your heart. My husband, Mike, and I always knew our son, Michael, had all the makings of a great teacher. When it came time for Michael to choose a major in college, he had many thoughts in mind. In his junior year in high school, he told us, "I think I know what I want to do. I want to be a special education teacher." Of course, we were thrilled about his decision because we knew it was a perfect fit for him. But we also knew we would have to support him in this journey. Michael's path required us to offer our time, love, and financial resources.

Becoming a teacher is not easy, and I know that firsthand. The Council for Exceptional Children knows how critical it is to support our rising teachers. From practicum to student teaching to our first-year teachers, CEC is committed to helping aspiring teachers with essential support and practical tools to be their best in the classroom. The Rising Stars Fund helps CEC attract, prepare, and retain a robust special education workforce. This fund is designed to provide continuing support for efforts and projects that assist educator preparation candidates and early-career professionals.

These include:

  • Student Teacher Support Program: This program gives student teachers complimentary CEC membership, bi-weekly support resources, and opportunities for cooperating teachers and university faculty members to access resources.
  • JumpStart: This online program equips new special educators with critical information, resources, peer networks, and expert guidance to set you up for success.
  • Early Career Professional Resources: From weekly lesson plans to technology tools and everything in between, our resources help new teachers navigate life in the classroom.

CEC could only implement these programs with the help of our members. When you give to CEC, you help to continue our mission: High-quality education that is inclusive and equitable for individuals with disabilities. Your contribution, regardless of size, is pivotal to our mission's success. We must support those who choose a profession in special education.

When something is right, you feel it in your heart. I give to CEC because I believe we can make a difference in the lives of individuals with disabilities and those with gifts and talents. It starts with just one person to make a change. I give for my students, colleagues, children, and the special education profession. I give because it feels right in my heart. Check out the Rising Stars Fund or any of CEC's other endowments if you want to give. Together, we can significantly impact and create a better future for individuals with exceptionalities.
