CEC Launches New Strategic Goals

Arlington, Va. ― The Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) and CEC Board of Directors developed a new five-year strategic plan to push CEC forward.

The plan—titled “Forward Together”—is the result of more than 15 focus groups, 20 hours of deliberation, and thousands of survey responses from CEC members over the past 10 months. Building on CEC’s 100-year legacy of work such as our hard-fought advocacy efforts and commitment to being an inclusive organization, the new strategy identifies some of the most vital priorities in the field and elevates them to the highest ranks of CEC’s work.

“As our world continues to change and evolve, CEC is responding with new priorities that are responsive to the field and inclusive of our entire community of diverse education professionals and the students they serve,” said 2021 CEC President Dr. Dennis Cavitt. “This plan is a living, breathing guidebook for how we believe CEC can best serve our members and the field as a whole over the next five years.”

CEC’s strategic direction is aligned around four key goals: develop and support an effective and diverse workforce of special education professionals; intentionally embed diversity, equity, inclusivity, and accessibility within CEC; increase the impact of CEC’s policy agenda for education professionals and for individuals with disabilities and/or gifts and talents; and establish CEC as a globally recognized leader in the field of special education. The plan also establishes a new vision: high-quality education that is inclusive and equitable for individuals with disabilities.

“At CEC, we believe that if we want to go forward, we must go forward together,” said CEC President Dr. Danielle Kovach. “And with your help, we are proud and excited to begin this important work that will help us evolve as we dive into our second century by moving forward together.”
