Biden Announces Pick to Lead Department of Education

On Wednesday, President-elect Biden announced Connecticut Education Commissioner Miguel Cardona as his pick for Secretary of Education, fulfilling a campaign promise to place an educator in the top Department of Education job.
Cardona has been an educator in Connecticut for his entire career, first as a classroom teacher and then as a principal, where he was recognized as Connecticut’s Principal of the Year. Cardona went on to work as a district administrator, assistant superintendent, and adjunct professor before becoming Education Commissioner last year.
Senate special education champion and friend of Cardona, Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT), praised the expected nominee, remarking "A classroom teacher, a fighter for educational equity, a consensus builder. He has risen quickly through the ranks for a reason."
