Unlocking the Power of Community: How One Teacher’s Journey with CEC Can Inspire You

Overcoming Imposter Syndrome

In the world of education, particularly special education, there’s often a distinct lack of the kind of professional recognition and support that is prevalent in other fields. Unlike the medical profession, where the title of "Doctor" carries an inherent respect and acknowledgment, educators, especially those in special education, often find their contributions undervalued. This is where organizations like the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) come into play, offering a platform for educators to feel seen, supported, and empowered.

One such educator who has found immense value in CEC is Laura Sebastian, a dedicated special education teacher and advocate who has been actively involved with the organization for several years. Her journey from a member to a leader within CEC highlights not only the personal growth and professional development that CEC fosters but also serves as a call to action for others to get involved.

A Journey of Discovery and Growth

Laura’s relationship with CEC began out of necessity during her Master’s program in Special Education. As part of her course requirements, she joined the most prominent professional organization available. Her initial goal was to enhance her work within Cincinnati Public Schools, but what she found was far beyond a mere membership.

The turning point came during the 2019-2020 school year at a CEC conference in Portland, Oregon. Here, Laura connected with the Ohio Unit of CEC, where she was welcomed with open arms. The enthusiasm and support from the unit’s leadership, including her former professor Rosemary Rotuno-Johnson and CEC-Ohio President-Elect Jennifer Webb, made a profound impact. It was this welcoming environment and the shared passion for special education that inspired her to take on leadership roles and eventually join the board.

The Value and Impact of CEC

For Laura, CEC has been more than just a professional organization; it has been a source of inspiration and a catalyst for her growth. Being a part of CEC has provided her with high-quality resources, ongoing professional learning opportunities, and a community where her work is recognized and valued. Whether through the Ohio Unit’s Professional Development committee or Leadership CEC, Laura has found that being surrounded by like-minded professionals has enriched her practice and reaffirmed her commitment to exceptional learners.

One of the most significant aspects of her experience has been the opportunity to collaborate with peers who share her dedication to improving the lives of students with exceptionalities. This network of professionals offers support, mentorship, and a wealth of ideas that enhance her instructional practices and professional development.

Skills and Growth: A Personal Account

Laura credits much of her professional growth to the experiences she’s had through CEC. The annual conventions, with their diverse sessions and keynote speakers, have been particularly influential. These events have provided her with new perspectives, strategies for managing challenging classroom situations, and innovative approaches to addressing the needs of her students.

Moreover, Laura highlights how networking through CEC has allowed her to step outside the confines of her own classroom and engage with a broader community of educators. This exposure has not only broadened her knowledge but also helped her establish valuable connections that continue to benefit her career and personal development.

A Call to Action for Teachers and Educators

the words Call to ACTION

Laura’s journey exemplifies the transformative impact of engaging with a professional organization like CEC. For those in special education, where professional recognition often feels lacking, CEC offers a crucial platform for growth, support, and networking.

Here’s how you can get involved:

  1. Join your local unit: Just as Laura found her footing with the Ohio Unit of CEC, connecting with your local unit can provide immediate support and opportunities for involvement. Attend meetings, participate in events, and engage with the community.

  2. Volunteer your time: Volunteering within CEC, whether at the local or national level, can be incredibly rewarding. Whether it’s joining a committee, helping plan events, or participating in leadership programs, your contributions will make a difference and enhance your professional journey.

  3. Attend conventions: The annual CEC convention & expos are a goldmine of learning and networking opportunities. Attend sessions, connect with presenters, and immerse yourself in the collective passion for special education.

  4. Engage in networking: Build relationships with fellow educators who share your commitment to exceptional learners. These connections can provide support, new ideas, and collaborative opportunities that enrich your practice.

Looking Ahead

As Laura continues her journey with CEC, including her recent roles as a research associate with the Systems Development and Improvement Center in higher education and as a doctoral student at the University of Cincinnati, she remains committed to the organization’s mission and values. Her story is a testament to the power of professional organizations in fostering growth, recognition, and a sense of belonging.

For those considering joining CEC or becoming more involved, you are encouraged to consider Laura’s experience. Engage with your state unit, participate in local and national events, and connect with others who share your passion. By doing so, you’ll not only enhance your own professional life but also contribute to the broader mission of improving education for all students.
