Spotlight on CEC Leaders: Dr. Catherine Creighton Martin and Dr. Clara Hauth
Authors, Educators, and Champions for Rising Stars in Special Education
When lifelong educators and co-authors Dr. Catherine Creighton Martin and Dr. Clara Hauth published The Survival Guide for New Special Education Teachers, they knew they wanted their work to give back to the community that shaped their careers. “Clara and I are proud to share that we donated a portion of our book sales to organizations that make a meaningful difference for students with disabilities and their families,” said Dr. Martin.
Drs. Martin and Hauth chose CEC as one of their two causes because of its lasting impact on their professional journeys. “CEC serves as a leading voice for special education, supporting both new and experienced educators. They offer valuable guidance to ensure teachers have the knowledge and skills needed to improve outcomes for all learners,” said Dr. Martin. “CEC provides a wealth of resources focused on high-leverage and evidence-based practices that strengthen teaching and learning.”
A portion of their book royalties now supports CEC’s Rising Stars Fund, following their earlier contributions to the Yes I Can Awards program. “My hope is that this support helps more new teachers attend CEC events, find mentors, and build the professional networks that will sustain them throughout their careers,” Dr. Martin explained. “Teaching is a calling, and it can also be challenging, but when educators feel connected and supported, they thrive—and so do their students.”
For Dr. Hauth, giving back to CEC was both professional and personal. “CEC has played such a critical role in my journey as a special educator and educational leader,” she shared. “From my very first year in my middle school math classroom, I’ve relied on CEC for guidance, research, and connection with others who share the same passion for helping every student succeed. When it came time to publish our book, I knew I wanted it to give back in a meaningful way. Donating a portion of the royalties to CEC felt like the perfect way to say ‘thank you’ and to help keep their incredible work going strong.”
Both educators have witnessed the tangible impact of CEC’s programs and leadership. “One of the most impactful initiatives has been the development of High-Leverage Practices (HLPs),” said Dr. Martin. “These practices support inclusive classrooms by outlining effective strategies for both special and general education teachers. HLPs also serve as a valuable roadmap for new educators, helping them build their skills step by step as they grow into their best professional selves.”
Dr. Hauth added, “Over the past decade, I’ve seen CEC champion inclusion, shape policy, and provide educators with tools that make a real difference in classrooms every day. They’ve empowered teachers to feel confident and supported, which ultimately changes outcomes for students.”
Both leaders encourage educators to engage in the CEC community. “Become actively involved in CEC divisions to enhance your professional growth,” advised Dr. Martin. Dr. Hauth agreed, “Don’t just sign up—get involved! The more you give to the community, the more it gives back to you.”
