Senate Confirms Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona

This week, the U.S. Senate confirmed Miguel Cardona to serve as the Secretary of Education with a 64-33 vote. He comes to this role after serving as an elementary school teacher, principal, district administrator, and Connecticut’s education commissioner.

Immediately following his confirmation, Secretary Cardona published a five-point plan to reopening schools for in-person learning and sent letters to education stakeholders, including a letter written in Spanish for parents and students. Through his five-point plan, Secretary Cardona will host a national summit on safe school reopening, share best practices, publish the second volume of the Department of Education’s COVID-19 Handbook, collect better national school data, and provide schools with substantial financial support. He remains optimistic about in-person learning.

Secretary Cardona began his tenure with a high-profile trip on Wednesday to visit elementary schools that have successfully gone back to in-person learning, accompanied by First Lady Jill Biden.
