CEC President Statement on the Confirmation of Dr. Miguel Cardona

Headshot of CEC President Dennis Cavitt

"On behalf of the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC), an organization of educators passionately united around supporting students with disabilities, I offer my congratulations to Dr. Miguel Cardona, our nation’s new Secretary of Education.

Dr. Cardona has committed his career to public education, from teaching to leading at the school, district, and state levels—experiences that will guide his work at the U.S. Department of Education. The last year has been harrowing for students, educators, families, and school systems impacted by the pandemic. As Secretary, Dr. Cardona will be charged with advancing President Biden’s education agenda, including supporting educators, supporting full funding of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.

We look forward to partnering with Dr. Cardona, an experienced and fervent educator, to support infants, toddlers, children, and youth with disabilities and/or gifts and talents."
