IES Announces New R&D Center
The Institute of Education Sciences (IES) announced the creation of a new National Research and Development Center, called the Center for Longitudinal Data in Education Research - Teacher Recruitment & Retention (CALDER-R&R).
This center will focus on addressing the persistent and worsening shortages in K-12 classroom teachers, with particular focus on high-poverty and high-minority schools.
Key policy topics to be examined include:
- ones to boost teacher diversity
- financial incentives
- labor market data to guide teacher specialization and job searches
- temporary licensure and changes to licensure test requirements
- teacher working conditions, such as a 4 day work week
The center will analyze data from nine states and metro areas including Atlanta and Houston to evaluate the effects of these policies on teachers, student learning, and equity. Researchers will also examine policy implementation, costs, and teacher perceptions of these initiatives. Findings will be shared to inform future improvements in teacher recruitment and retention strategies.
