House Seeks Additional $305 Billion in K-12 Education Stabilization Funding

Led by Reps. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), Jahana Hayes (D-CT), and Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), 114 House members sent a letter to House and Senate leadership requesting at least $305 billion in new funding for K-12 education stabilization.

Current projections estimate that states could need at least $230-$305 billion in funding to stabilize their K-12 education budgets as a result of the impact of the coronavirus on school revenues. The projected decrease in state revenues comes at the same time as schools face increased costs associated with providing full access to distance learning, expanded learning opportunities due to interruptions in learning and an increased demand for school meals.

The letter states, “the projected cuts to public education spending due to our current crisis are two and [a] half times worse than the Great Recession’s impact on our public education.”
