100th anniversary logo

As we enter our 100th year of leading special education, the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) is recognizing exceptional educators from around the world who have shown a passion, dedication, and commitment to making a difference in the lives of the students who they teach. Hear from teachers about their personal experiences working in the field, and get inspired to make your own impact this year.

Joseph Ellis

Joseph represents the Dallas Independent School District (ISD) as the Special Education Department Chair for Eddie Bernice Johnson Elementary School, where he has had the pleasure of opening a new school serving at the elementary level serving students from pre-K through 5th grade. Obtaining his bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from Virginia Commonwealth University, Joseph thought he wanted to work in the legal system.  When he decided to become a teacher, he knew special education was the path for him. His master's degree knowledge is from the University of San Diego in Educational Leadership. Joseph is looking forward to improving his building academically as he welcomes new students back after the pandemic.
