In this manuscript, the authors describe a set of research based strategies that special educators can use when reviewing high-stakes assessment score reports and communicating the results to parents. Through the RISC process (Review, Interpret, Streamline, and Communicate), special educators can be better prepared to collaborate with families regarding the results of statewide high-stakes assessments. Throughout the process, teachers are provided with several strategies and tools to assist them in a) evaluating the degree to which their state’s assessment score reports align with research and recommended practices for reporting assessment results to families, and b) interpreting and communicating the results to families to facilitate collaborative planning and educational decision-making.
