A token economy is an evidence-based practice that is frequently used in schools to change student behavior. A token economy is a reinforcement system in which tokens are provided to a student following the demonstration of a target behavior. The tokens are then traded for specific back-up reinforcers. There are multiple components that must be included when developing a token economy to ensure its effectiveness. However, research indicates that often components are omitted which likely decreases the success of the token economy and limits the student’s progress. It is important for general and special educators to know and address each of the components of a token economy in order for students to experience success.
