Young children who are at-risk or identified as having a developmental delay, autism spectrum disorder, and speech or language impairments may not engage in appropriate problem solving. As a foundational skill, problem-solving is a process that generally develops naturally across both the home and school environments, however some children struggle with the skill. Through the use of center-based direct instruction using problem-solving picture-based situation cards, teachers can support the development of the skill set needed for children to become active problem solvers.
