Lessons Learned

  • Many teachers of blind children do not understand that their students are at high risk for child sex abuse.
  • Many teachers of blind children receive little or no training regarding mandated reporting.
  • Teachers of blind children do not know how to effectively train their students on how to recognize child sex abuse.

We are the only ones on the planet actively working on this topic as it relates specifically to children who are blind or have low vision. So, we either look at the general data pertaining with people with disabilities and once in a great while there is a way to parcel out those who report vision loss. Also, we can go way back in the literature and find one or two relevant articles pertaining to people with visual impairments several decades ago, in the Journal of Visual Impairment & Blindness for example.
