Senators Demand Preservation of Special Education within Department of Education
U.S. Senators Patty Murray (D-WA), Vice Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee; Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Ranking Member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education; Bernie Sanders, Ranking Member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, and the entirety of the Senate Democratic caucus called on the U.S. Department of Education (ED) to prioritize students, comply with federal law, and immediately reverse its decision to transfer responsibility for special education programs and civil rights enforcement out of ED. The Senators argue that the move is part of the Administration's broader effort to dismantle ED, jeopardizing critical funding, support, and services for students, schools, and families nationwide.
