Senate Confirms Catherine Lhamon to Lead Office for Civil Rights
The U.S. Senate confirmed Catherine Lhamon as Assistant Secretary for the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR). In May, President Biden nominated Lhamon for this position, which she held during the Obama Administration.
Lhamon has been serving as a White House domestic policy adviser in the Biden administration and was formerly the chair of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights.
In her role as Assistant Secretary, Lhamon will oversee the Department’s efforts to ensure students’ civil rights are upheld. While in this role under the Obama Administration, Lhamon prioritized making OCR’s data more available to the public, expanded the Civil Rights Data Collection, increased transparency around equity measures, improve the data quality system, and ensure data quality.
