President-Elect Biden Signals Education as a Priority; Names Education Department’s Agency Review Team

In Saturday’s victory speech, President-Elect Joe Biden remarked, “For American educators, this is a great day for you all.”

Biden, whose wife Dr. Jill Biden is an educator who intends to continue teaching while serving as the First Lady, put education front and center during his campaign. This week, he continued to prioritize education, announcing the team in charge of the Administration’s transition at the Department of Education, with many familiar names on the roster.

This 20-person team of volunteers draws from the nation’s two largest teachers’ unions as well as top education policy officials from the Obama administration. Linda Darling-Hammond, head of California’s state board of education and founder of the Learning Policy Institute (LPI), will lead the education transition team. LPI has been a leading voice on the educator shortage crisis and emergency funding during COVID-19.

Biden’s education policy priorities include full funding of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), tripling Title I funding, increasing teacher pay, helping educators pay off student loan debt, and providing emergency pandemic-related funding to address a range of issue from supplying personal protective equipment to addressing learning loss.
