OCR Releases Plan to Bring Back Employees
According to a declaration submitted on August 19th by Steven Schaefer, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Policy in the U.S. Department of Education, the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) has established a call-back schedule for employees who received reduction-in-force (RIF) notices.
As reported in The 74, up to 250 OCR employees may return to work throughout the fall despite the Administration’s ongoing effort to permanently eliminate their positions. The reinstatement is tied to a Massachusetts lawsuit brought on behalf of students with discrimination complaints that stalled after the layoffs. Judge Myong J. Joun ordered staff restored so OCR can fulfill its statutory duties, including investigating and remedying civil rights violations against students with disabilities.
