OCR Adds Four New Fact Sheets for Series on Medical Conditions
The Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) has published four new resources to educate students with disabilities, their families, and schools about their legal rights under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
Added to the collection are fact sheets concerning protections for students with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), migraines, narcolepsy, and who stutter. These conditions add to the existing series of specific medical conditions that include fact sheets on anxiety disorders, asthma, bipolar disorder, cancer, depression, diabetes, eating disorders, epilepsy, food allergies, GER/GERD, and sickle cell disease.
The resources outline when these medical conditions activate protections under Section 504, the types of adjustments an educational institution may need to implement to prevent unlawful discrimination, and the steps an institution might take to address instances of discrimination.
