NCLD and Understood Publish Resources on Effective Teaching Practices

The National Center for Learning Disabilities (NCLD) and Understood have released a series of new resources collectively titled "Forward Together: Pandemic Lessons for Effective Teaching Practices." The resources include a survey of educators’ experiences during the pandemic, several reports, and a series of state, district, and state-level policy recommendations.

Through two national surveys and a series of focus groups, NCLD and Understood have identified three main areas at which to target policy recommendations: educator burnout, student disengagement, and unfinished learning.

With regards to educator burnout, survey results indicate 69% of teachers feel there are too many standards they are expected to meet and 64% report that it is difficult to meet all of their students’ needs. Therefore, the recommendations suggest streamlining critical standards for learning, providing wellness resources to educators, and focusing on workplace culture. The survey results also indicate that students with learning and attention issues have been less engaged in schoolwork, and thus recommend the dissemination of resources to re-engage these students.

The policy recommendations also emphasize paying special attention to students with disabilities who are also impacted by poverty and/or are English learners.
