National School Counseling Week 2026
From Monday, February 2nd, through Friday, February 6th, we take the time to recognize and learn how school counselors contribute to schools and impact their students’ lives.
The history of counseling in schools began in the early 1900’s with “vocational guidance” in secondary schools (Gysbers, 2010). Over the course of the twentieth century, it evolved into what we have today: counselors who ensure students can function to the best of their abilities in a system that can be overwhelming.
In special education, school counselors play many roles for students with disabilities. They often serve as advocates for students’ needs, collaborate with special education personnel, encourage family members to take an active role in their child’s education, and much more (American School Counselor Association, 2022).
Below are resources to continue your education on the work school counselors do for their schools and students.
