The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) released the results of the most recent National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) exams for fourth and eighth grade math and reading on October 24th. Results show the largest ever decline in math performance with no states making advancement. The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) schools showed the only improvement, a 1 point increase in eighth grade reading. Some states show no change in the areas tested, the number varying by grade level and subject area. According to NCES Commissioner Peggy G. Carr, “The results also underscore the importance of instruction and the role of schools in both students’ academic growth and their overall wellbeing. It’s clear we all need to come together—policymakers and community leaders at every level—as partners in helping our educators, children, and families succeed.”
