NAEP Results Prompt ED Response

Citing that scores for the lowest performing students on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) have continued to decline, the U.S. Department of Education (ED) issued a statement about the lack of recovery from pandemic-related learning loss. According to ED, the department is committed to “reorienting our education system to fully empower states, to prioritize meaningful learning, and provide universal access to high-quality instruction.”

According to the National Assessment Governing Board, an independent, nonpartisan board that sets policy for the Nation’s Report Card (NAEP), results from the 2024 assessment for grades 4 and 8 compared to 2022 show:

  1. Average scores increased in mathematics at grade 4; no significant change at grade 8;
  2. Average scores declined in reading at both grades;
  3. No significant change for most states in both subjects and grades; and
  4. Lower percentages of students were absent 5 or more days in both subjects and grades.
