On Thursday, U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luján (D-NM) and U.S. Representatives Teresa Leger Fernández (D-NM) and Jahana Hayes (D-CT) reintroduced the Loan Forgiveness for Educators Act to expand federal loan forgiveness for educators. “The Loan Forgiveness for Educators Act updates the Teacher Loan Forgiveness (TLF) program by having the federal government make monthly federal student loan payments for educators serving in early childhood education programs and high-need public schools and completely forgive any outstanding debt after five years of service.”

This legislation would help to address key strategies to increase the numbers of people attending educator preparation programs, increase the number of diverse candidates, and reduce teacher shortages. The Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) is among 52 organizations that have endorsed the legislation.
