Introducing Ruby Owiny: Chair of CEC's Teacher Candidate Support Network

Ruby Owiny

I had the pleasure of speaking with Ruby, who has played a pivotal role in shaping the Council for Exceptional Children’s (CEC) Teacher Candidate Support Network. Ruby began her journey in this program as the program chair when the idea was first introduced. Her deep commitment and vision have since led her to become a member at large on the CEC board, focusing on guiding the workgroup in designing and refining the program. Her passion for preparing future special educators is evident in her approach and dedication.

As the chair of the workgroup, Ruby feels honored to contribute to teacher preparation beyond her regular duties. She sees the network as an extension of CEC’s mission and vision, aimed at providing teacher candidates with valuable resources and opportunities. The network helps candidates build connections with CEC members and other educators, enhancing their professional growth. It offers a "village" of support, providing resources and networking opportunities that complement their formal education and practical experiences.

What Changes Have Been Made to the Teacher Candidate Support Network?

The Teacher Candidate Support Network has undergone significant changes to better meet the needs of teacher candidates. Previously focused on undergraduates in traditional teacher preparation programs, the network now serves all teacher candidates in their final year of any teacher preparation program. The resources, which are now accessible for an entire year, include digital materials like webinars, handouts, and blogs. The program has also introduced monthly “sip and chat” sessions, office hours for personalized support, and expanded resources to enhance preparation and engagement.

What Specific Resources or Tools Does the Network Provide?

The network offers a range of resources designed to support teacher candidates throughout their final year. Each semester, candidates receive 16 digital resources, including webinars, handouts, and blogs from both CEC and other reputable sources like IRIS and the CEEDAR Center. The expanded format now includes 32 resources over a year, providing timely and relevant support. Monthly “sip and chat” sessions and office hours offer additional opportunities for candidates to connect with experts and receive personalized guidance and additional resources particular to their individual needs. These tools help candidates apply concepts in their classrooms and prepare for their careers.

How Does the Network Help Teacher Candidates Build and Expand Their Professional Networks?

The network fosters professional connections by encouraging candidates to share ideas and engage with a broader community. It supports candidates in finding contacts across different states and regions, enhancing their knowledge and career opportunities. The introduction of a certificate of completion, which may offer membership discounts, aims to acknowledge and incentivize engagement. This networking aspect is crucial for candidates as it helps them build relationships that can benefit their careers and professional growth.

Why Is It Important for CEC to Support Teacher Candidates?

CEC's support for teacher candidates is crucial in addressing the ongoing shortage of special educators. The organization’s goal is to enhance teacher preparation, recruit, and retain high-quality educators. By providing robust support and resources, CEC aims to ensure that teacher candidates are well-prepared and supported throughout their careers. The ultimate aim is to benefit students with exceptionalities and improve the quality of education they receive.

What Would You Have Liked to Have When You Started Student Teaching?

Ruby reflected on the value of having access to a broader network and diverse perspectives during her own student teaching. She wishes she had the opportunity to connect with educators from different regions and settings, which would have enriched her understanding and problem-solving skills. The network now offers this kind of support, helping candidates avoid “recreating the wheel” and benefiting from a wealth of shared experiences and strategies.
