House Republicans Urge for the Quick Reopening of Schools
Last week, House Education and Labor Committee ranking member Virginia Foxx (R-NC) and Representative Burgess Owens (R-UT) sent a letter to the CEO of the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) pressing state education officials to find pathways to quickly re-open schools.
In their letter, Representatives Foxx and Owens asked the CCSSO to respond in two weeks to requests asking how state education officials are advancing plans for reopening and how they are using stimulus funds to do so. Additionally, Republican House members are demanding hearings in key committees to aid the reopening process, noting that continued school closures are having “devastating consequences” on all students, especially the most vulnerable.
The House Oversight Committee and the Science, Space, and Technology Committee have both received hearing requests from House Republicans who emphasize the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)’s most recent guidance in their reasoning.
