House Education Leaders Introduce Education-Related Bills

Last week, House Education and Labor Committee Chairman Bobby Scott (D-VA) joined with Representatives Norcross (D-NJ), Hayes (D-CT), Fernandez (D-NM), and Sablan (D-CNMI) to introduce a package of education bills aimed at addressing prevailing education issues heightened by the pandemic.

  • The Save Education Jobs Act, which CEC endorsed both last year and this year, would provide $261 billion over 10 years to prevent further educator shortages due to stressors such as anticipated budget shortfalls.

  • The Rebuild and Reopen America’s Schools Act would provide $130 billion in emergency funding to support infrastructure improvements. Funding would be targeted to high-poverty schools.

  • The Learning Recovery Act would provide $75 billion over two years through the Title I-A formula to support students through extended school day and summer school to address learning loss.

The suite of bills represent top priorities for the Chairman as he looks to negotiate a future COVID-19 package.
