EdTrust Creates Teacher Diversity Tool

Concerned about the lack of educators who reflect the multicultural backgrounds of the students they teach, the Education Trust (EdTrust) has created a tool to examine states’ efforts to increase the number of teachers of color in their states. Entitled 50 State Data and Policy Teacher Diversity Tool, the tool aims to provide the data needed for states to analyze their current situations and “develop policies that recruit, support, and retain a high-quality and diverse educator workforce.” Analysis of data is key to understanding which policies effectively increase the cultural diversity of the educator workforce, and EdTrust hopes that their tool will aid in making the statewide commitments necessary to successfully recruit and retain teachers of color. In addition to the states tool, EdTrust features analyses for eight states to show how the data can be used: California, Illinois, Louisiana, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Texas.
