ED Offers Guidance to Support Diverse Educator Workforce
The U.S. Department of Education (ED) offers non-regulatory guidance in a new publication titled Supporting a Diverse Educator Workforce to Strengthen Teaching and Learning. This guidance highlights research demonstrating how a diverse educator workforce can improve student success, offers strategies for state educational agencies (SEAs) and districts to enhance their efforts, and identifies Federal funding sources to support these initiatives.
ED encourages SEAs and districts to advance their work on increasing educator diversity by collaborating with a broad range of partners at the state and local levels to analyze data on student, teacher, and school leader diversity at state, district, and school levels; identify barriers and opportunities for fostering a diverse educator workforce; set and publicly share clear educator diversity goals at the state or district level; and develop and publish a strategic plan to achieve these goals.
The federal guidance is advisory and does not impose additional requirements beyond existing laws and regulations.
