Department of Education Releases ARP Funds to Support Children with Disabilities

On Thursday, the U.S. Department of Education announced that more than $3 billion of American Rescue Plan (ARP) funds will be released to support Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) grant programs targeted at infants, toddlers, children, and youth with disabilities. This funding is in addition to the $122 billion already allocated to the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund through ARP.

The targeted supplemental funding will go specifically to IDEA’s three major formula grant programs: $2.6 billion will go to states under Part B Section 611, $200 million to preschool grants under Part B Section 619, and $250 million to IDEA Part C grants. The allocation of these funds will be administered by the Office of Special Education Programs using the same requirements outlined under IDEA and the Uniform Guidance.

This funding, the result of last-minute negotiations during Senate debate of ARP, was fueled by a year of intensive advocacy from grassroots advocates, including more than 10,000 letters and hundreds of meetings from CEC members.
