CUE Founds Global Task Force on AI and Education
In an effort to be proactive, the Brookings Institution Center for Universal Education (CUE) is embarking on a two-year initiative to look at the impacts of generative artificial intelligence (AI) on global education. Coined as a “premortem,” their goal is to identify potential negative impacts of AI on teachers and students and ways to mitigate the impact.
The initiative will focus on two central questions concerning the potential risks of AI from early childhood through secondary school and what can be done today to positively “harness the opportunities” that AI offers for children’s learning and development. The Task Force will focus on ensuring that educators drive the dialog on AI use so that students and teachers do not cede their intellectual abilities to technology.
While generative AI carries the potential for increased student agency and hands-on learning, the task force is concerned that without the critical thinking skills to accompany their investigations, learning will become shallow.
