#CEC2024: What to Do in San Antonio

CEC’s 2024 Convention and Expo will be held in sunny San Antonio, Texas, in March 2024. Thousands of special education professionals from around the world will come together to learn, share, grow, and connect. But what happens when sessions end for the day? Check out all the amazing food, sights, and adventures that San Antonio has to offer! 

 

See the Sights 

San Antonio is the oldest municipality in Texas, full of amazing natural and historical sights. Here are just a few of the amazing sights to behold: 

  • San Antonio River Walk
    The San Antonio River Walk winds around some of the city’s most iconic sights, like Marriage Island, Hemisfair, the Pearl, and so much more!  

  • The Alamo
    The Alamo is a historic Spanish mission and fortress, and the site of the Battle of the Alamo. The historical sight now serves as a museum, offering tours for visitors.  

  • Southtown
    This unique neighborhood boasts a wonderful assortment of new and historic buildings, housing art galleries, eclectic shops, breweries, and restaurants.  

  • Japanese Tea Garden
    This century-old public park features a 60-foot waterfall, koi ponds, a pavilion, and plenty of walkways. This is one of the most photographed sites in all of San Antonio.  

  • San Antonio Botanical Garden
    The 38-acre botanical garden provides a green oasis in the center of San Antonio, with opportunities to stroll trails filled with native Texan plants, and tons of fun for the whole family. 

  • Natural Bridge Caverns
    Travel below the surface to visit some of the largest commercial caves in all of Texas. With unique geologic features, the caverns are a sight to behold. 

 

Satisfy the Foodies 

San Antonio has an amazing food scene, with a wide range of cuisine and some of the best Mexican food in Texas. Try some of the city’s signature dishes, like puffy tacos, Texas quail, pozole, and more! 

  • Curry Boys BBQ
    This barbeque restaurant marries Texas smoked meats with Southeast Asian flavors, with top-notch brisket served with curry.  

  • Best Quality Daughter
    This restaurant offers Asian fusion cuisine housed in the historic Mueller House with Instagram-able décor. 

  • Rosario's ComidaMex & Bar
    Named one of the best Mexican restaurants in San Antonio, Rosario’s is a staple for both locals and tourists.  

  • Cured
    Enjoy local ingredients at this charcuterie-focused restaurant! 

  • Savor | The Culinary Institute of America
    San Antonio is home to the Texas campus of the Culinary Institute of America. Savor is the school’s restaurant, highlighting the talented students and their new skills. 

  • Pharm Table
    Pharm Table offers plant-forward meals with tons of vegan and paleo options, giving patrons healthy, nourishing, delicious meals.  

  • La Gloria
    Showcasing Mexican and Southwestern flavors, this eatery offers amazing Mexican street foods.

  • Mexican Cultural Institute
    The Mexican Cultural Institute has showcased Mexican art and culture for over 50 years, with vibrant exhibits, events, and performances.  

  • San Antonio Museum of Art (SAMA)
    SAMA’s collection spans over 5,000 years of global art, with collections from the Mediterranean, Asia, Latin America, and more. 

  • UTSA Institute of Texan Culture
    This museum and library showcases Texan history and culture, with an array of exhibits, displays, and programs. 

  • Briscoe Western Art Museum
    This modern museum exhibits the art, history, and culture of the American West.  

  • The Witte Museum
    The Witte Museum is consistently ranked as one of the top museums in San Antonio, offering exhibits and experiences around nature, science, and culture.

  • Go RIO River Cruises 
    Explore the San Antonio River with either a narrated river cruise or a river shuttle.

    Visit the hippos, giraffes, zebras, and more at the San Antonio Zoo. 

  • Six Flags Fiesta Texas
    Take a ride on the Scream drop tower, hang out with Superman, and have fun at this local amusement park.
