Cardona Nomination Clears First Hurdle
On Thursday, Dr. Miguel Cardona’s nomination to be Secretary of Education was approved by the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee by a bipartisan 17-5 vote.
Cardona is a life-long educator who plans to draw on that experience as the leader of the U.S. Department of Education. His vision is for a more inclusive and equitable education system, including for students with disabilities. During his confirmation hearing last week, he remarked that fully funding the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act would be a “game changer.”
The final step in Cardona’s confirmation process will be consideration by the full Senate. That vote is expected in the coming weeks.
