Biden Administration Announces Nominee to Lead the Office for Civil Rights

On Thursday, the Biden Administration announced the nomination of Catherine Lhamon for Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR), a post she previously held during the Obama Administration. OCR is the Department of Education’s enforcement arm, whose mission is to ensure the rights of all students to equal access to education and to promote educational excellence.

Lhamon is currently serving as Deputy Assistant to the President and Deputy Director of the Domestic Policy Council for Racial Justice and Equity. Most recently, she was the chair of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights and Legal Affairs Secretary to California Governor Gavin Newsom.

Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona commended her nomination, remarking that she “has a strong record of fighting for communities of color and underserved communities… [and] she will continue to fight for fairness, equity, and justice for all of America's students."
