Administration Cancels Nearly $1B in Education Research Contracts

On Monday night, the Trump Administration canceled nearly $900 million in contracts for the Institute of Education Sciences (IES), a major U.S. Education Department (ED) agency responsible for funding education research and maintaining extensive education statistics. The cuts resulted in the termination of 89 contracts, significantly impacting the institute's work, including long-term studies on student learning and research on teaching strategies and support for youth with disabilities. Many CEC members held these grants and were impacted by the abrupt cancellation This could lead to a substantial loss of public knowledge about U.S. schools. Additional contracts from other ED agencies have been reported since Monday, and the current scope of canceled funding is not fully known.
Action Alert: Since Tuesday, approximately 9,000 letters have been sent to Congress by CEC members and their peers to stress the importance of IES research. Join in this action and invite others to do the same here.
