Audio prompting (AP) and video prompting (VP) are both evidence-based interventions used to teach valuable transition skills for postsecondary life, such as vocational and independent living skills, to students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Although both are well supported by research, given the particular needs and strengths of students with ASD, VP may be a more effective strategy to try with these students first. Nevertheless, if a student is able to acquire skills with VP, it may be possible to then fade to AP, which allows for less visual attention, more portable technology, and a reduction in the possible stigma of being perceived as reliant on a supervisor’s or job coach’s assistance. Benefits of each intervention strategy, and a guide on implementation, fading, and promoting long-term independence in vocational environments are provided.
