Check In/Check Out (CICO) is one of the most frequently used Tier 2 interventions in schools; however, it is not effective for all students. Research and practice have demonstrated that adaptations can made to tailor the program so that it better meets the needs of individual students who are nonresponsive to standard CICO. We provide an overview of adaptations to the CICO standard protocol that research has indicated can improve student outcomes. In addition, we offer step-by-step instructions about how to make adaptations. Finally, we provide examples to illustrate the adaptation process.
