Research conducted in the last twenty years has increased our understanding of the most effective methods for increasing the literacy skills of students with Intellectual Disability (ID). The purpose of this paper is to provide special education teachers, general education teachers, and other members of Individual Education Program (IEP) teams with ten research-based tips to consider as literacy instruction is designed for and delivered to students with ID. A Literacy Instruction and Support Planning Tool is provided to guide IEP team discussions related to the ten tips and to aid planning of instructional priorities.
