On Wednesday, May 10, 2023, the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) within the U.S. Department of Education launched Expect, Engage, Empower: Successful Transitions for All! The kickoff event included remarks from OSEP Director Valerie Williams, who stressed the importance of beginning postsecondary transition planning when a child is identified with a disability and ramping up throughout the progression through school; engaging effectively in transition planning that empowers children and youth with disabilities; and valuing of high expectations for children with disabilities.

The event included three panels: families and youth discussed expectations for postsecondary transition and stressed the importance of collaboration; educators shared thoughts and experiences, stressing the importance of having all stakeholders on the same page in the best interest of young scholars; and leaders from the State of Maine showcased collaborations and systems change to support postsecondary transition, with key ingredients including stakeholder input, communication, shared passion, funding shared projects, an effective feedback loop, and sharing data.

OSEP’s will host several more events throughout the year in support of its transition initiative.
