Flow chart above laptop

Mark Schneider, Director of Institute of Education Sciences (IES), announced an IES initiative to create what is being named as ARPA-ED, patterned after the transformative work of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). The new unit will tackle some of the compelling questions for the future of education and how to use AI to its best educational advantage. Shifting its research to a use-driven strategy, IES is already working to harness the power of AI in a coordinated effort with the National Science Foundation. The IES/NSF institute “seeks to develop a sophisticated AI-driven assessment and a tailored instruction program for students with speech and language disabilities.” Their hope is to build on this partnership approach and to extend to other projects in the future.
