FCC Chair Looks to Expand E-Rate Subsidies to Families with Virtual Students

This week, Acting Federal Communications Commission Chair Jessica Rosenworcel stated a desire to expand E-Rate subsidies to students attending school virtually.

The E-Rate program, which provides billions to support broadband and telecom connectivity in schools and libraries, may now be expanded to support at-home internet devices and Wi-Fi hotspots for families with children attending school virtually.

Rosenworcel emphasizes the move as an opportunity to close the homework gap and provide emergency relief to families and communities. The FCC is now collecting public comment to assess the viability of opening up the funding to families with virtual learners.
