American Federation of Teachers Establishes Task Force to Address Educator Shortages
This week, the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) announced it will establish a new task force to address nationwide teacher and staff shortages.
According to a RAND study, the effects of the pandemic have exacerbated discontent and burnout within teachers and staff, resulting in nearly 1 in 4 teachers noting they would leave their jobs by the end of the 2020-2021 school year. Prior to the pandemic, 1 in 6 teachers said they were likely to leave.
To assist districts experiencing extreme shortages in innovating solutions, AFT’s Teacher and School Staff Shortage Task Force will hold virtual and in-person meetings as well as listening sessions across the country. AFT will also present a report on their findings at their biennial convention in Boston in July of 2022.
