As high school students with disabilities leave secondary settings and special education services, their transition often is associated with limited opportunities. One way to support the transition may be to guide the student in developing a self-directed summary of performance (SD SOP). The SD SOP is a student-developed compendium of files describing a student’s strengths, needs, and accommodations. It may be a useful mechanism allowing a student to describe his/her characteristics and performance to future audiences. Additionally, developing an SD SOP may provide an avenue for students to learn critical transition skills, such as self-advocacy and communication of one’s strengths and interests.
