U.S. Department of Education Approves Accountability Waivers for All States, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico

The Department of Education (ED) has approved waivers for all states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico from requirements under Titles I, II, and III of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. The waivers of assessment, accountability and certain reporting requirements come in response to widespread school closures due to COVID-19.

As part of the waivers provided to states, ED seeks assurances that:

  • Any school that is identified for comprehensive or targeted support and improvement or additional targeted support and improvement in the 2019-2020 school year will maintain that identification status in the 2020-2021 school year and continue to receive supports and interventions consistent with the school’s support and improvement plan in the 2020-2021 school year.
  • The state will provide the public and all local education agencies with notice of and the opportunity to comment on the waiver request (e.g., by posting information regarding the waiver request and the process for commenting, on the state website).

Waiver requests and approvals can be found here.
