Office for Civil Rights Releases Safeguarding Students’ Civil Rights

The Office for Civil Rights (OCR) released its annual report to the Secretary of Education, the President, and Congress this week. Entitled Safeguarding Students’ Civil Rights, Promoting Educational Excellence, the report summarizes OCR’s Fiscal Year 2021 accomplishments. During the fiscal year, OCR resolved 8,238 cases, initiated 17 proactive investigations, and joined the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services in releasing guidance for schools regarding the provision of services to students for whom long COVID has become a disability. Cases resolved concerned: addressing the accessibility of programs, services, and facilities; ensuring appropriate educational supports for students with disabilities; addressing civil rights related to restraint and seclusion; and providing appropriate support for English language learners with disabilities. In addition, the report highlights the activities of the National Digital Access Team.
