Education Secretary Publishes Call to Action on Nationwide Teacher Shortage and Student Recovery

This week, U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona issued a call to action for states, districts, higher education institutions, and K-12 schools to use American Rescue Plan funds to address the teacher shortage and accelerate student recovery. 

In his statement, Secretary Cardona emphasizes the need for a “well-prepared, well-supported, well-compensated, and diverse educator workforce” as it is linked to student recovery, especially for the most marginalized students. The Secretary’s recommendations towards states include establishing teaching as a Registered Apprenticeship Using Department of Labor standards and establishing and expanding loan forgiveness or service scholarship programs. Recommendations targeted towards districts include increasing the number of partnerships between EPPs and districts supporting teacher residencies.

Finally, the Secretary’s recommendations toward higher education institutions and EPPs include increasing the number of teaching residency programs and program capacity. Stakeholders are encouraged to use American Rescue Plan funds in establishing the Secretary’s recommendations.
