100th anniversary logo

As we enter our 100th year of leading special education, the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) is recognizing exceptional educators from around the world who have shown a passion, dedication, and commitment to making a difference in the lives of the students who they teach. Hear from teachers about their personal experiences working in the field, and get inspired to make your own impact this year.

Sophia Bastaich

My name is Sophia Bastaich and I am currently starting my 5th year of teaching middle school exceptional education. I have the pleasure of teaching both in a collaborative and self-contained math setting. This year, I am also teaching a pilot self-contained class called Skills Development. Teaching exceptional education in middle school is an extremely rewarding service. Middle school is a pivotal time in the lives of all students, but especially those with exceptionalities. My main focus is to help students build confidence and be proud of their unique strengths. Through the daily incorporation of social-emotional activities, I strive to develop impactful relationships with my students. I hope you enjoy seeing some of the activities that we do in our class.
